Georgetown Plantation Tour: A Rare Look Inside Historic Lowcountry Homes
Each spring, one of the most anticipated events in the South Carolina Lowcountry returns to Georgetown: the Tour of Historic Plantations and Homes, hosted by the women of Prince George Winyah Church.
As a member of the church and someone who has spent a lifetime in Georgetown’s historic communities, this event holds a special place for me. For more than 75 years, the Prince George Winyah Church Women have opened the doors to some of the most remarkable historic properties in the region — many of which are rarely accessible to the public.
The 2026 Georgetown Plantation Tour will take place March 27–28, 2026.
What Makes the Georgetown Plantation Tour Special
Unlike traditional museum tours, this is a self-guided tour of private historic homes, plantations, and gardens located throughout Georgetown County.
Visitors have the opportunity to explore:
-
Historic rice plantations
-
Classic Lowcountry homes
-
Private town houses in Georgetown’s historic district
-
Beautiful gardens and landscapes
-
Architectural details that date back centuries
Many of the homes featured on the tour are privately owned and not normally open to visitors, making this a rare opportunity to experience authentic Lowcountry history firsthand.
Georgetown’s Rich Plantation History
Founded in 1729, Georgetown sits in the heart of South Carolina’s historic Lowcountry.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Georgetown County became one of the most prosperous regions in America due to its rice and indigo plantations. At the height of the rice trade, Georgetown County was considered the wealthiest county in the United States.
The plantations and town homes built during this era helped shape the architectural and cultural identity of the region. Today, many of these historic properties remain preserved by local families who care deeply about Georgetown’s history and heritage.
The plantation tour offers a rare opportunity to see these homes and landscapes up close.
Supporting the Georgetown Community
Beyond celebrating history, the tour also supports an important cause.
All proceeds from the event benefit community outreach programs and the preservation of the historic buildings of Prince George Winyah Church, one of the oldest churches in the region.
For decades, the church women who organize the tour have used the funds raised to support local charitable work and maintain the church’s historic campus in downtown Georgetown.
